“The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow.” This quote asserts that teachers shape the future as they play an influential role in constructing the knowledge and skills of students, so they can become adults who make informed decisions in our future society. However, to effectively shape the future, teachers have certain responsibilities to fulfill. My philosophy of education is that in a classroom, teachers are responsible for creating a positive and safe learning environment, having high expectations for students, teaching them social-emotional skills, and providing students with quality, engaging education.
The first aspect of my educational philosophy is that teachers are responsible for creating a positive learning environment. This is because learning starts in the classroom, but students cannot learn effectively if their class does not promote a safe space for learning. Attitudes and behaviors of the teacher and the students influence the quality of the class environment. In my classroom, I will establish a positive environment that is a judgement-free zone where students are allowed to make mistakes as they learn. I will also be culturally sensitive, open-minded, and inclusive of all students regardless of their diverse backgrounds. Each student in my classroom will be treated fairly and equitably with no bias towards a specific group. I will love them all equally! I will also encourage students in the class to take on these same attitudes when they interact with their peers and discourage any prejudice and racism in the classroom. Through intergroup collaborations, tensions stemming from differences between students may be alleviated as they work together as a team to reach their full educational potential. By creating a positive learning environment among diverse students, I will help create knowledgeable students and future leaders.
My educational philosophy also notes that aside from teaching curriculum, teachers should have high expectations for students. Therefore, in my classroom, I will believe that all students can learn and that all are capable of succeeding. Teachers are also responsible for teaching important life skills as well. Social skills, thinking skills, and emotional skills are all things that teachers must educate students on, so I will ensure to teach my students these things throughout the too. Social skills teach students to communicate effectively and collaborate with their peers. Thinking skills help students think critically, problem-solve, and make informed decisions. Meanwhile, emotional skills allow students to appropriately manage their emotions and effectively resolve inner conflict such as dealing with stress.
My educational philosophy also states that teachers should provide a quality education. I will provide quality education by making sure my lessons adhere to CCSS and NGSS. This will ensure that my students are learning content and developing skills as expected for their grade level. I will also shape my lessons in a way that meets the learning needs of each of my students. This means that differentiated versions for my lessons and accommodations will be prepared as needed in order to meet students' needs and academic levels. I will further provide quality education by presenting my lessons in a multitude of ways to increase the effectiveness of my teaching. I will present information in ways such as orally, visually, and with hands-on examples for making the lessons more interactive. I would assess students' learning throughout instruction as well in various ways too to get a proper gauge of each students' understanding after lessons.
Lastly, aside from providing quality education, I will ensure that the education is engaging in order to motivate my students. I will do this by implementing lots of activities for students to interact and participate in, and just overall finding ways to make my lessons fun. I will also motivate students by providing them praise and encouragement for their educational efforts and for when they participate. I may also incorporate a ticket system or point system in my class as well. This system will allow them to earn tickets or points every time they are on task or participating which they can then exchange for prizes. This would be a further source of motivation for my students.
