Culturally Relevant Teaching
Gloria Ladson-Billings believes in a pedagogy known as culturally relevant teaching which means that students' learning is empowered by incorporating aspects and knowledge of their culture into the content that is being taught to them. This allows students to draw connections between both their home and school life as they learn school curriculum that is relevant, effective, and meaningful to them. Culturally relevant teaching improves the success of all students as teachers create a community of learners through supporting who students are as individuals and believing that each of them are capable of success.
Gloria Ladson-Billings' culturally relevant teaching pedagogy stood out to me because as teachers, we will have students from different backgrounds and cultures in our classroom. Therefore, it is important to connect instruction to their backgrounds whenever possible in order to enhance their interest in the content and to improve the effectiveness of instruction. Incorporating their backgrounds and cultures into instruction also allows us to honor where they come from, and it helps to establish a safe, secure, and inclusive learning space that promotes their learning. |
